Verona was the first stop on my first trip to Italy and it holds a special place for me. There’s a wonderful charm to this city.

During my first night there, I walked around an area near the center of town and decided to snap this shot of one of the side streets. I loved that I was one of the only people awake to experience that spot in Verona at that moment.

Passion Butterfly

Passion Butterflies (also known as Gulf Fritillaries) appear in my backyard every summer due to the passion flowers that run along my fence. While striking, they can be somewhat difficult to photograph just because they rarely seem to take a break from fluttering around.

This one I found resting on one of the leaves, possibly to lay her eggs. I then took the photo and extracted the color from the background to bring the contrast out.

Streets of Florence

Italy was the primary focus of my first trip to Europe in 2003. I spent the bulk of a month traveling throughout the upper half of the country and easily saw the appeal of the Tuscany region. In many ways, Florence is the crowned jewel of Tuscany – and for good reason. It boasts some jaw-droppingly beautiful buildings and is the center of so many precious works of art.

I love that the Florentines in the center of this photo almost appear as if they were posing for a painting, yet still maintain a naturalness while the buildings provide a great perspective.

Omaha Beach

In 2008, I made another trip to Europe, spending the bulk of the trip traveling through France. It was my aim to get to the Normandy region – specifically, the Normandy American Cemetery, a memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives in World War II. This is also the resting place my great uncle, who was among the fallen.

This photo is of the pathway to Omaha Beach, one of the five drop-off points during the Allied invasion in 1944. It was eerie to be in such a peaceful place to know what had occurred so many years before. If one didn’t know the history of the area, it would simply appear as just another beach.

The slithering snake was an added bonus.

View From The Presidio

On a recent trip to San Francisco, a close friend and I drove toward the Presidio and parked the car. After a short walk, I was able to capture this view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Despite having lived in California for the bulk of my life, I’m still awestruck by the city and this beautiful monument.
